UPDATE: Dog that brought a Calgary community together finally in from the cold

CALGARY- A husky-wolf cross that had been running loose in the southeast neighbourhood of New Brighton has finally been caught.

Akira had evaded all attempts by Bylaw Services and worried residents to rescue her.

But Tuesday night, Alex Arcega with the Yamnuska Wolfdog Society managed to nab her with the help of a homeowner.

Arcega had been building a relationship with Akira for several weeks, using his male dog “Maddox” to make her feel comfortable.

Akira was very interested in Maddox and on Tuesday night, she was distracted enough that when she stepped over Maddox’s leash, Arcega was able to wrap it around her leg and then around her belly.

She fought when she realized she was caught.

A homeowner who was watching opened her garage, where both dogs were corralled.

Akira is now happily settling in at a new foster home where the family is very experienced with wolfdogs.

People in New Brighton had banded together to make sure Akira survived the bitter cold by feeding her and providing warm bedding.

It’s been a bonding experience for some.

“The real beautiful story of what she’s done is that even with the weather we’ve had,  and some of the coldest temperatures on the planet, is the community has really come together and bonded,” says Curtis Harren.
