Canadian films to be highlighted at Palm Springs festival

TORONTO — Canadian cinema will be front and centre at the upcoming Palm Springs International Film Festival.

The line-up for the 25th annual event, unveiled Thursday, includes the Spotlight on Canada Cinema program.

It recognizes the country for “making extraordinary strides in cinema.”

Enemy, the made-in-Toronto drama directed by Montreal’s Denis Villeneuve, will be screened at the Palm Springs fest, which runs Jan. 3 to 13, 2014. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Sarah Gadon and Isabella Rossellini.

Quebec films that will be showcased are Sébastien Pilote’s drama Le Démantèlement (The Auction); Louise Archambault’s Gabrielle; Chloé Robichaud’s Sarah Prefers to Run; Wiebke von Carolsfeld’s Stay; and Denis Côté’s Vic + Flo  ont vus un ours (Vic + Flo Saw a Bear).

Vancouver filmmaker Peter Stebbings will present Empire of Dirt, which stars Cara Gee, Jennifer Podemski, Luke Kirby and Michael Cram.

Ontario is represented by Bruce LaBruce’s Gerontophilia, Don McKellar’s The Grand Seduction, Craig Goodwill’s Patch Town and Richie Mehta’s Siddharth.

Also featured will be The Manor, a documentary by Shawney Cohen about a Jewish family running a strip club in Guelph, Ont.
