OLIVER, BC – Armed with tools that pry open mailboxes, thieves have been targeting community mailboxes in Oliver in recent weeks.
“They’ve breached the mailboxes and availed themselves of whatever is inside,” says Sgt. Ken Harrington.
Sgt. Harrington, with the Oliver RCMP, says several secluded community mailbox locations were broken into last weekend.

But while tips usually come in through Crime Stoppers to help make an arrest, the potential to recover the stolen mail is slim, according to Harrington.
Residents like Harry Mitchell whose mailboxes were emptied aren’t so concerned about cheques in the mail, but is more aware of identity thieves.
“You still might lose valuable information,” says Mitchell.
“The best way for people to protect themselves from these thieves is to check their box every day, preferably after the delivery time,” suggests Sgt. Harrington.
RCMP say similar mail thefts took place in Keremeos, Cawston and Kaleden.
