Hamilton joins other municipalities in declaring city ‘disaster area’

TORONTO – Hamilton politicians have voted unanimously to seek provincial assistance for costs related to last month’s ice storm.

The approved motion talks about declaring affected parts of the city to be “disaster areas” for the purposes of the Ontario Disaster Relief Program.

Damage figures have not been finalized, but they are expected to run into the tens of millions of dollars.

At least five other councils — Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga, Caledon, and North Perth — have already voted on motions asking for their municipalities to be declared as disaster areas.
