Pride flag raised at Calgary’s City Hall for Olympic kickoff

CALGARY- A colourful new flag has gone up in front of City Hall, just in time for the Olympic kickoff.

On Friday afternoon, a rainbow flag was raised to show solidarity with the gay community, in protest of Russia’s policies. Several other cities across the country did the same, including Halifax, Montreal and Edmonton.

However, Toronto’s decision to do the same irked Mayor Rob Ford, who said he would like to see it replaced with the Canadian flag.

“This is about the Olympics, this is about being patriotic to your country,” Ford said. “This is not about sexual preference.”

The Alberta government is also flying the pride flag at the Legislature.
