The regional municipality’s council voted 6-1 on Tuesday against changing a bylaw that would have paved the way for wind farm development.

The topic had South Qu’Appelle residents divided over the last few months. Some had signed on with Renewable Energy Systems, an American company that had wanted to investigate the viability of wind turbines in the region.
Others worried about potential health effects, while also saying wind farms could have a negative impact on property values.
South Qu’Appelle Reeve Jeanne DesRocher says public opposition to wind turbines was an overwhelming factor in the R.M. council’s decision.
