Message from Bob Rae

Colleagues and friends,

I want to advise you that I am willing to let my name stand for the position of interim leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. It is my understanding that this issue will be discussed by the caucus on May 25, 2011, and by the national board of the Liberal Party before the deadline of May 30.

After the worst election defeat in our history, it is vital that we come together as a party, and engage directly with Canadians about what matters to them. The pursuit of social justice and a sustainable prosperity in a united Canada has to remain our focus. We cannot afford to get caught up in internal wrangling.

Canadians want a progressive party that is committed to building the country. At our best we can be that party. We have to be the party that can take the country forward.

The task facing us is great, but you know I am a "glass half full" person. We have a talented and hardworking caucus in both the House and the Senate. We have much goodwill in the country. There is a strong need for a party that is not caught in the trap of ideological excess. We need to use the talents of every member of the Liberal team right across the country.

I shall abide by any rules about the interim leadership, agreed to by the caucus and the Board. I have made it a watchword of my time in public life to practice the politics of unity and principled compromise. I shall continue to do so.

The party has to make a choice between having a leadership convention soon, and having a period of rebuilding and then a leadership 18-24 months from now. I favour the second option, and that is the context within which I would accept the appointment as Interim Leader. If this longer period is agreed to, it is my understanding that the exact timing of the leadership election will be recommended by the caucus to the national board.

Chers collègues et amis,

J’aimerais vous aviser que je suis prêt à me porter candidat pour le poste de chef intérimaire du Parti libéral du Canada. D’après ce que j’ai compris, cette question devrait faire l’objet d’une rencontre du caucus, le 25 mai prochain, ainsi que du conseil national du Parti libéral avant la date butoir du 30 mai.

Après la pire défaite de notre histoire, il est crucial de nous soyons unis comme parti et que nous engagions des discussions directement avec les Canadiens sur les questions qui les touchent. La poursuite de la justice sociale et d’une prospérité durable dans un Canada uni doivent demeurer nos priorités. Nous ne pouvons pas nous laisser prendre dans des tractations internes.

Les Canadiens veulent un parti progressiste qui s’engage à construire le pays. Nous pouvons devenir ce parti. Nous devons être le parti qui fait avancer le pays.

La tâche qui nous attend est grande. Vous savez cependant que pour moi le verre est toujours à moitié plein plutôt qu’à moitié vide. Notre caucus est talentueux, tant à la Chambre des Communes qu’au Sénat. Nous avons des appuis partout au pays. Le Canada a besoin d’un parti qui n’est pas

prisonnier d’une idéologie rigide. Nous allons puiser dans les compétences de l’équipe libérale d’un océan à l’autre.

Je me plierai à toutes les règles concernant la direction intérimaire du parti, qui auront été adoptées par le caucus et le Conseil. J’ai eu pour slogan, durant m présence au parti, de pratiquer une politique d’unité et de compromis fondés sur des principes. C’est ce que je continuerai à faire.

Le parti doit faire un choix entre organiser une convention à la direction bientôt ou prévoir une période de reconstruction suivie d’une convention à la direction, dans 18 à 24 mois. Je favorise la seconde option, et c’est le contexte dans lequel j’accepterais d’être nommé chef intérimaire. Si cette période devait être plus longue, je comprends que c’est le caucus qui recommandera au Conseil national la date exacte de l’élection à la direction du parti.

Je me réjouis à l’idée de discuter de ces questions avec vous au cours des prochains jours.
