New shoes first step to Manitoba Marathon for students

WINNIPEG – The St. George School running club has been busy preparing for this year’s Manitoba Marathon. The only problem: improper footwear has slowed some students down.

“Most of these kids don’t have the ability to get a good, comfortable pair of shoes,” said Elsie Yip, the club’s co-ordinator.

So the Manitoba Marathon and its sponsors, CJOB and Global Winnipeg, have stepped up — with a little help from Skechers. Each member of the club has been sized up for a brand new pair of runners.

“It looked like a lot of them could use new shoes, specifically running shoes,” said Tanya Macchia, Skecher’s district sales manager. “So I feel the need was there.”

The shoes not only give the students a leg up on training but also an active lifestyle.

“Anyone can participate in running, anyone can get started,” said Manitoba Marathon’s Shannon D’Ignazio. “It doesn’t matter which fitness level you’re at, you’ll feel yourself getting stronger and faster. It’s a personal gratification.”

The shoes have been handed out but it’s now up to the kids to provide the energy for race day.

“I’m excited,” said Shane Rizvi, one of roughly 30 students in the running club. “I’m excited about the race.”

The Manitoba Marathon will be held June 15. The six events all start and finish at the University of Manitoba.
