Former teacher charged with sexual exploitation of student

SASKATOON – Police have charged a Saskatoon woman with sexual exploitation in a case dating back to 2000.

The charge comes after a woman approached police in October 2013 stating she had been sexually assaulted by a teacher when she was 16.

Erin McGonigle, 38, was arrested after an investigation by the sex crimes and child abuse unit.

The victim was a student where McGonigle taught at the time.

Saskatoon Public Schools (SPS) said in a statement it became aware of the allegations in September 2013 and immediately suspended McGonigle pending an investigation by its human resources department. McGonigle was terminated on Nov. 12, 2013.

SPS said they worked cooperatively with Saskatoon police throughout the investigation.

McGonigle is scheduled to appear in Saskatoon provincial court Thursday afternoon.
