Watch above: Edmonton-Calder MLA David Eggen plans to run in the leadership race for Alberta’s New Democratic Party.
EDMONTON – Edmonton-Calder MLA David Eggen says he plans to seek the leadership of the Alberta New Democratic Party.
The 51-year-old is the first person to announce his intentions, after Brian Mason announced in April he will be resigning as head of the party effective Oct. 19.
“Brian is encouraging all of our MLAs to run. I made it known to him a few months ago that I was thinking about it and he says go for it. I learned so much from him, it’s a very firm platform to start functioning from,” said Eggen.

While details of the nomination process have yet to be laid out, Eggen believes he has a wide range of skills to offer the party and the province as a whole.
“I think I have a lot of leadership skills: I’m good at collaborative organizing, I’m a person that’s been a teacher and a health care advocate for many years,” he said Sunday afternoon.
