Kinder Morgan insists Burnaby tank farm is safe

Kinder Morgan has launched a public relations campaign to counter recent concerns about expansion plans for its tank storage facility on Burnaby Mountain.

Right now, there are 13 oil tanks on the mountain’s south slope.

The expansion would add 14 more oil tanks, and the Burnaby Fire Department has said that could increase the risk of a catastrophic explosion.

The company gave our Tanya Beja an exclusive tour of the site, to illustrate its safety measures.

Each tank has a set of “fire eyes” or a fire wire, equipment that will trigger an alarm if flames erupt.

The site is also manned 24 hours a day.

A nearby pump can draw foam and water from an on-site reservoir, and the mixture can be applied through pipes directly connected to the tanks.

While the company has trained its staff to use the new equipment, it’s still waiting for Burnaby Fire Firefighters to stop by.

Kinder Morgan says in 60 years, the Burnaby facility has never seen a fire. But in the event of an emergency, the company would depend on city crews to respond.
