TORONTO – Toronto mayoral candidate John Tory is calling for Rob Ford to resign on a day the mayor is set to return to office following a stint in rehab.
“Mr. Ford has repeatedly broken faith with the citizens of Toronto,” Tory said in a written statement. “He may choose to run again. But for the good of the city he should step down as Mayor without delay.”
Ford plans to resume his mayoral duties on Monday afternoon, according to a letter he sent to the city clerk’s office.
Meanwhile, mayoral contender Olivia Chow released an attack video on Monday criticizing Ford’s “billion-dollar” savings claim.
“Toronto’s budget actually went up every year under Ford, not down,” a female voice in the video says. “Some savings. Some mayor.”

The mayor’s return to the intense public spotlight comes after spending nearly two months away to seek help for alcohol abuse.
Ford is expected to devote much of his time to getting re-elected in this fall’s mayoral race.
His city councillor brother-turned campaign manager Doug Ford said the mayor will make a statement at city hall upon his return, but won’t field any questions.

Ford has already been spotted north of Toronto in a Barrie, Ont., clothing store on the weekend, where he posed for some pictures that were posted on Instagram.
