Urgent appeal in B.C. for blood as supplies hit six-year low

VANCOUVER – There is an urgent appeal for blood donations tonight as Canada’s blood supply is at a six-year low.

According to Canadian Blood Services, one in two people in B.C. has a personal connection to someone who needs or has needed blood.

Yet they can’t collect enough of it as people fail to show up or cancel their blood donation appointments.

A single gift of blood can save up to three lives and donors are desperately needed.

“We are at a critical condition,” said David Patterson from the Canadian Blood Services. “We have approximately three days worth of supply in our national inventory and our optimal supply is around five to eight days so the situation is quite serious.”
