TORONTO – The city of Toronto is asking for $64.2 million from the provincial government to cover the costs of the Dec. 2013 ice storm.
The city submitted its final request for funding from the Ice Storm Assistance Program just a few days shy of the one-year anniversary of the storm which blanketed the city in ice.

Initial reports had pegged the cost of cleaning up at nearly $106 million.
The money will go to recovering costs spent on emergency response, shelter and food for people who had to seek shelter at city-run facilities as well as immediate and long-term cleanup efforts.

Toronto’s submission comes two weeks after it was revealed only one of 53 eligible municipalities had requested funding from the nearly $190 million that was still available.
The storm knocked the power out to nearly a million people on Dec. 21, 2013 and some were left without power for several days after Christmas.
