One person in custody after shots fired near Scarborough jewellery store

WATCH: One person is in custody after shots were fired at a jewellery store in Scarborough during an attempted robbery. Carey Marsden reports.

TORONTO – One person is in custody after shots were fired at a jewellery store in Scarborough during an attempted robbery.

The shooting happened shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Eglinton Avenue and Warden Avenue.

A spokesperson for Toronto EMS tells Global News that one male, believed to be in his 20s, was taken to hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.

Vloddy Kishuba was standing nearby when the shooting started. He said the man was trying to rob the jewellery store when he was shot by an armed security guard.

Kishuba said he heard approximately five shots.

“He ran out, and security shot him in the leg. He stumbled across the street to his truck over there to get away, then cops came. They took him down, then they took him away,” Kishuba said.

Police later confirmed the events, alleging the man was attempting to rob the store when he was confronted by the armed security guard.

Police said the security guard could be charged pending an investigation.

The parking lot of 1921 Eglinton Avenue East has been closed while police investigate.

Traffic in the area could be slow as a result.
