Man fatally shot by Bathurst police identified as Michel Vienneau

A 51-year-old man fatally shot by police in Bathurst, N.B. on Monday has been identified.

Sources confirm the man is Michel Vienneau, a businessman from Tracadie-Sheila.

He was reportedly returning from a trip to Montreal and was near the VIA Rail train station in Bathurst when he was shot.

In a statement on Monday, Bathurst police Chief Eugene Poitras said the incident occurred around 11:25 a.m. while police were conducting an investigation.

Poitras said a man, who police have not yet identified, was taken to the Chaleur Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Vienneau was the owner of an electronics store in Tracadie-Sheila.

Messages of condolence have been left on Facebook pages belonging to him and his girlfriend.

Bathurst City Police have handed off the investigation of the incident to Nova Scotia RCMP.
