WINNIPEG — Another whiff of scandal wafted over Winnipeg City Hall Friday with word a top official had been suspended — though it was unclear why.
Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman announced in a brief statement that acting chief administrative officer Deepak Joshi had been suspended “effective immediately.”
“It was not decision reached lightly and I can just simply tell you that I’ve lost confidence in his ability to serve in that role,” Bowman said to reporters later Friday. He refused to provide details on why Joshi was relieved of his duties and escorted from city hall. Joshi is suspended with pay. The suspension is for three days, on Wednesday the executive policy committee will review the decision and can extend that suspension for another 30 days.

Joshi was appointed interim city CAO in October 2013, after the abrupt departure of former CAO Phil Sheegl, who was under fire for alleged mismanagement of the city’s fire hall construction program.
Acting chief operating officer Michael Jack will take over the CAO duties.
