MELFORT, Sask. – A Saskatchewan man has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison for having sex with an 11-year-old girl. It happened in January 2013 in the Melfort area.
The name of the 22-year-old man and his home community cannot be published to protect the identity of the victim.
According to court documents, the girl’s parents went shopping, leaving the man in charge of their kids. Court heard the girl asked the man to have sex with her, but the judge said the child can’t consent to sex – under the law, the age of consent for sexual activity is 16.

In a victim impact statement, the girl’s parents said they feel betrayed by the man, adding they had thought of him as a member of the family.

The girl continues to go undergo counselling and now lives with her grandparents.
The case was heard in Melfort provincial court on Jan. 27. With credit for time already served, the man will serve another 30 months.
