WATCH: Simon Whitfield announced as torchbearer for Pan Am Games in Toronto
TORONTO – Organizers of this summer’s Toronto Pan Am/Parapan Am Games have unveiled the list of its first 10 torchbearers for the relay on Monday.
Canadian Olympian Simon Whitfield joins a youth speaker, a Canadian Forces veteran, a music-loving teen, a former professional hockey player and a Toronto police officer as just some of those chosen to carry the flame in the torch relay.
Minister of State (Sport) Bal Gosal, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Toronto Mayor John Tory were all on hand for the announcement.
“I encourage all Torontonians, to come out and cheer on the torchbearers and share in the experience,” said Tory.
Organizers also revealed the official aluminum torch which is 65 centimetres tall and weighs 1.2 kilograms.
The flame can burn between 10 to 12 minutes and withstand up to 70 kilometres per hour winds.

The 41-day torch relay will begin on May 30 and end July 10 at the opening ceremonies in Toronto.
Each of the 3,000 torchbearers will complete a 200-metre relay segment.
The Pan Am Games will take place between July 10-26 and August 7-15 for the Parapan Am Games.
