List of Winnipeg infrastructure projects approved, Waverley underpass 1st

WINNIPEG — Despite some heated debate, city councillors unanimously approved a priority list of major construction projects that puts an underpass at Waverley Street near Taylor Avenue at the top.

After the Fort Rouge underpass, an underpass at Marion Street and Archibald Street is next on the list, followed by the extension of Chief Peguis Trail to Route 90. At the bottom of the list is the widening of Kenaston Boulevard which ended up last because Kapyong Barricks is tied up in a land claims dispute.

Some councillors including Janice Lukes and Scott Gillingham brought up the importance of completing the inner ring road through the Chief Peguis project. But ultimately both agreed with ranking that put the project third.

The list will now be submitted to the province then Ottawa in hopes of securing millions of dollars in funding.

Even if the Federal government approves cash to flow, it will be some time before any project moves ahead.

Detailed design work still needs to be completed before shovels go in the ground.

The city would also have to come up with a way to fund its share of the project. Under the funding arrangement of the Building Canada Fund each level of government contributes one third.
