TORONTO – The union representing Durham Region high school teachers has agreed to resume labour negotiations with the board on Friday as strike action continues.
Nearly 24,000 students in Ajax, Whitby, Pickering and Oshawa remain out of class as both side try to iron out a deal to end the labour dispute.

“We remain optimistic that through negotiations, a local deal can be achieved,” said the Durham District School Board in a media release on Wednesday.

“The DDSB remains committed to the bargaining process and to reaching a fair deal that puts student success first and gets our students back to the classroom.”

Across the province, a total of about 70,000 high school students are being forced to stay at home because of similar strikes by teachers in Peel and Sudbury.
Meanwhile, the union representing Ontario’s 73,000 public elementary school teachers and occasional teachers says it will take strike action as early as May 11.
