Food source poisoning at Okanagan raptor rehab centre

SORCO Owl. Global News

OLIVER – Somebody has poisoned the primary food source for birds of prey at the South Okanagan Rehabilitation Centre for Owls near Oliver.

The facility was broken into overnight on June 6th but the main buildings were not entered.

However, the individual(s) did get into the food centre where we raise rats as live food for the raptors. We know that, because two days later, most of the rats were dead,” says SORCO manager Dale Belvedere in a news release.

He adds a pathology test confirmed the rodents died from a poisonous substance.

“Poisoning the food source for the birds in our care is a despicable act of cruelty. Our mascot, Houdini, has exhibited some possible side effects so she is receiving precautionary treatment.” says Belvedere.

SORCO is reviewing its security procedures.
