LAC-MÉGANTIC, Que. – The mayor who became the public face of Lac-Mégantic after the rail tragedy that killed 47 people in the town in 2013 is stepping down.

Colette Roy-Laroche said on the town’s website she will not seek re-election in this fall’s municipal vote.

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard paid tribute to Roy-Laroche, saying she was a magnificent example of courage, determination and service in terrible circumstances.

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre called her his “idol” and a “role model.”
Roy-Laroche said she needs to slow down and to think about her health and her family.
