WINNIPEG — A sad day for the Winnipeg Police Service as officers said goodbye to Riley, the Police Service Dog who passed away Tuesday. The Winnipeg Police K9 Unit made the announcement Friday, that Riley, badge number 52, had lost a valiant battle with cancer.

The Canine member was a product of the WPS in house breeding program and was raised by his partner, Constable Jeff Katcher from 12 weeks of age.

They completed their training and began working as a team in September 2012.

Riley was a general patrol dog, trained in narcotic detection as well as being assigned to the Tactical Support Team.  He fathered 9 pups last September.

Riley was five-years-old.
