HALIFAX – Halifax Regional Council voted to carry a motion on Tuesday asking for a staff report to consider designating the donair as the city’s official food.

District 9 (Halifax West Armdale) Councillor Linda Mosher faced some pushback when she brought up the idea.

One councillor argued that there were other dishes that could take up the mantle instead.

Another councillor debated the merit of using city resources on the matter.

A typical donair is made up of meat, tomatoes, onions, and donair sauce wrapped together in a pita.

“The donair is, unofficially, the official food of Halifax,” said Norman Nahas, the owner of King of Donair, located near the intersection of Quinpool Road and Oxford Street.

He said he welcomed the idea because it could result in a tourism boost, and, subsequently, help local businesses.

“Probably a quarter of the restaurants in town have some sort of donair offering on their menu,” said Nahas.

The motion also noted that the donair is not just a regional delicacy, it’s a nationally and internationally recognized dish.
