Nomination meeting halted for Manitoba Tories

John Woods / The Canadian Press

WINNIPEG — Manitoba Progressive Conservatives are saying nothing so far about why a nomination meeting on Wednesday night was halted before votes were counted.

Party members were choosing between two candidates — Michael Bailey and Robert Harper — in the Assiniboia constituency in west Winnipeg.

Two party sources told The Canadian Press that concerns were raised that some memberships sold by at least one candidate were not valid.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the votes were not counted and the nomination has been put off indefinitely.

Officials at the Tories’ caucus office and party headquarters have not responded to interview requests.

The two candidates have not spoken publicly about what happened.

Bailey did not return phone calls and Harper declined to comment other than to say he has no idea when the nomination meeting will be rescheduled.

Assiniboia has been held by New Democrat Jim Rondeau, but he is retiring and the Tories are hoping to recapture what was once a party stronghold.
