Andre Denny pleads guilty to manslaughter in 2012 death of Raymond Taavel

HALIFAX – A Nova Scotia man originally charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of a prominent gay rights activist has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Andre Noel Denny of Membertou had been scheduled to stand trial on the murder charge in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in September, but it was delayed when he fired his lawyer.

He was charged in the death of 49-year-old Raymond Taavel, who died outside a Halifax bar in April 2012 following an altercation.

Denny is scheduled to be sentenced in late January.
