Canadian embassy in Belgium closed until further notice

The Canadian embassy in Brussels, Belgium has been closed until further notice.

The federal government sent out a warning via its Twitter account to inform Canadians that the embassy in the Belgian capital “will only provide emergency consular service.”

The tweet provides a link to a statement on the Government of Canada web site which tells Canadians in Belgium to remain cautious because of the terror threat.

“There is no nationwide advisory in effect for Belgium. However, you should exercise a high degree of caution due to the current elevated threat of terrorism,” the statement reads.

Belgian police conducted a series of 22 raids around Brussels and the countryside which resulted in 16 arrests but Paris fugitive Salah Abdeslam was not among them.

The raids capped a tense day with hundreds of troops patrolling and authorities hunting for one or more suspected militants, the Belgian government chose Sunday to keep the capital on the highest state of alert into the start of the workweek to prevent a Paris-style attack.

Citing a “serious and imminent” threat, Prime Minister Charles Michel announced that schools and universities in Brussels will be closed Monday, with the subway remaining shut down, preventing a return to normal in the city that is also home to the European Union’s main institutions.
