Ontario woman allegedly faked cancer to scam $200,000 in benefits

TORONTO – A 32-year-old Hamilton, Ont. woman faces fraud charges after she allegedly faked having cancer to bilk a provincial agency out of $200,000 in benefits.

It is alleged the accused submitted claims for her cancer treatment under the Ontario Disability Support Program and was outed after discrepancies were discovered by case managers.

Police were called in to investigate and found the woman came up with an elaborate scheme in which she requested to stay in a hotel to receive treatment.

Investigators said they seized evidence that indicated the “reported activities to be fraudulent.”

Sarah Lucas was arrested on Nov. 17 and faces two counts of identity fraud, two counts of use forged documents and fraud over $5,000.
