Victim of New Year’s Day shooting dies in Edmonton hospital

EDMONTON – A man died in hospital Thursday morning nearly a week after being shot in downtown Edmonton.

Abdikadir Mohamed, 25, was one of two men shot during the early morning hours on New Year’s Day.

“It’s an auspicious start to the New Year,” EPS spokesperson Scott Pattison said Thursday. “It’s grim.”

Police were called to a lounge near 111 Avenue and 93 Street at about 4:30 a.m. regarding a reported shooting.

When officers arrived at the lounge, they found bullet casings and a car with its driver-side window shot out. They also learned two men were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds, police said.

Mohamed suffered serious injuries and the other man reportedly had non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said they’re looking for “anything” in relation to the deadly shooting.
