REGINA – For the second time this week Regina firefighters were busy battling a fire at the same home in the Heritage neighbourhood Thursday morning – and this time it was a close call for one Regina firefighter.
Fire crews were called to 1763 Toronto Street where a blaze started in a main floor bedroom of the abandoned house.
Firefighters were following proper procedures when a firefighter fell through the floor from the second floor to the main level of the building. The firefighter did not suffer serious injury and remained on-duty.

“This close call demonstrates the inherent risk our firefighters face each day,” said Fire Chief Ernie Polsom.
Crews said the fire got into some concealed spaces and it was a stubborn to get under control.
On Monday crews were called to the same house to put out a fire in the front porch. That fire was determined to be arson, and there is strong suspicion today’s was also deliberately set but the cause is still under investigation.
Polsom is now calling on the public to be vigilant of suspicious activity in the wake of these two fires, and the string of arson fires in North Central late last year.
“There were things that were left open, left available to light fires in,” he said.
“Please pay attention to that. It’s only a matter of time before one of these set fires, one of these crimes of opportunity is going to result in the death of somebody; a civilian or a firefighter.”
