Tourism up in Montreal in 2015 thanks to low loonie

MONTREAL – The low value of the Canadian dollar has caused a bit of a doom and gloom situation across the country.

But thanks to the low loonie, tourism was booming in Montreal in 2015.

The city’s tourism office released its 2015 roundup and said 9.6 million people visited Montreal last year – up from 9.2 million in 2014.

The statistics for the report came from foreign traffic at Pierre-Elliott Trudeau Airport, hotel statistics and attendance at various cultural and music festivals.

According to the tourism office, business was also smooth sailing for the cruise ship industry.

Tourism Montreal expects more than 10 million people to visit the city in 2017 to celebrate Montreal’s 375th anniversary.
