Bathurst police officers charged in Michel Vienneau shooting elect jury trial

Two New Brunswick police officers charged in the fatal shooting of a 51-year-old businessman have elected to be tried by judge and jury.

Bathurst City Police constables Patrick Bulger and Mathieu Boudreau each face charges of manslaughter with a weapon, two counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of unlawfully pointing a firearm in the January 2015 death of Michel Vienneau.

The electronics store owner was shot in his vehicle near the Bathurst train station during what police said was a drug investigation.

An RCMP investigation completed in November determined that Vienneau was not involved in criminal activity.

No pleas have been entered, and the two officers are due back in court March 22 to set a date for a preliminary hearing.
