CALGARY – Jennifer Clayton was in court Friday facing charges of animal cruelty and neglect.
She was fined $8,000 and is banned from ever owning animals again. The maximum sentence for a charge like this is up to five years in prison or a $10,000 fine.

Court heard Clayton was living with mental illness and did not intend to neglect her dog by not feeding him over a four-month period.
The terrier mix named Rugby died in 2013.
The Calgary Humane Society laid the charges under the criminal code after learning Clayton failed to provide adequate care to her pet.
