Wanuskewin Heritage Park looking for UNESCO designation

Wanuskewin Heritage Park announced Friday that it plans to apply to become a designated UNESCO world heritage site. The park, located just outside of Saskatoon, will undergo six to 10 years of renovations in order to meet the criteria of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Main features of the renewal project include renovating and expanding the facility and land base, perserving the ecology and biodiversity of the site, and returning a small heard of plains bison to the park.

“We’re hoping around five years we can have an initial herd, whether it’s 20 or 30 depending on the size of the land that we have,” said Felix Thomas, chief of the Saskatoon Tribal Council.

Wanuskewin is looking at importing the bison from a pure bred herd in Montana.
