As of midnight Friday, Halifax Regional Police will officially take over policing services at Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

HRP will now be responsible for armed response to the baggage screening area and non-passenger vehicle screening areas. They will also take over strategic patrolling and emergency and intervention services.

There will be a team of 14 dedicated officers on site — one sergeant, 12 constables and a K-9 officer.

“This represents an opportunity for HRP to enhance our overall policing capacity and showcase our professionalism to travellers in and out of Halifax as well as to visitors to Halifax Stanfield International Airport and the entire airport community,” said Deputy Chief Bill Moore in a release.

The officers have been given special training. They’ve also been working with the RCMP, who have held the contract for the past several years.

HRP says they will continue their work with RCMP, as the airport is within their jurisdiction.

HRP will have the airport policing contract for five years.

They were awarded the contract in November after putting in a bid to be the provider of armed response and other services.
