According to the Quebec Lifesaving Society, smaller pools do not require an on-duty lifeguard.

“Except, you need [someone] with [an] aquatic emergency certificate near the deck to react if there’s a problem with the swimming pool,” said Raynald Hawkins, the society’s executive director.

Officers could not confirm the size of the pool at the hotel.

Police are awaiting a coroner’s report to determine the exact cause of death, but say he may have suffered a medical emergency.
