Ontario sending 100 firefighters to battle Fort McMurray wildfire

Ontario is sending 100 firefighters to Fort McMurray to help fight the raging wildfire there that forced the evacuation of more than 80,000 people.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said roughly 1,600 structures in the community have been destroyed or damaged.

Ontario will also provide 19 support staff to supervise the firefighters.

“We are committed to helping out other provinces in times of need. This is obviously one of those times,” Premier Kathleen Wynne told the legislature Wednesday.

Natural Resources Minister Bill Mauro says the crews will be deployed on Friday after help was called for. He said additional firefighters and other resources are available if requested.
