WINNIPEG – Former Winnipeg Goldeyes slugger Josh Mazzola was back in Winnipeg this week with his new team the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

Mazzola, 30, signed with the RedHawks as a free agent in the off-season. He initially was trying to find work in affiliated baseball over the winter and when that didn’t materialize the Goldeyes no longer had the cap space to afford him. But the separation was amicable and Mazzola has no hard feelings.

“Rick (Forney) and I talked a lot this off-season and he just went a different direction.” said Mazzola. “I have no hard feelings towards Rick. Rick’s a great guy, a great manager and same goes for the whole organization.”

Mazzola played several different positions with the Goldeyes but in spring training he’s been tabbed as Fargo’s new third baseman. The RedHawks were more than willing to take the Goldeyes castoff.

“I would send him texts or hit him with a phone call and finally it got more serious at the end and we were able to sign him.” said RedHawks manager Doug Simunic. “Who wouldn’t want the league’s leading home run hitter ? I mean I do.”

Mazzola played four seasons in Winnipeg. Last season was one of his most productive with a league leading 20 home runs along with 63 RBI and a .279 batting average.

“Baseball is a funny business sometimes and Winnipeg always is a great place to play and will always have a special place in my heart.” said Mazzola. “Just one of those decisions I had to make for myself, my family and never count out coming back here one day, but it’s just something for right now was the best decision to make.”

The RedHawks just completed a pair of exhibition games in Winnipeg and they’ll play eight more games here in the regular season but they won’t be back until August.

“I have nothing negative to say about the city ever.” Mazzola said. “It’s got a special place in my heart.”
