Construction season causing headaches for Winnipeggers

WINNIPEG – Construction season is bringing road closures and detours that some Winnipeggers say are making their streets less safe.

“Before the ambulances and stuff used to go down Selkirk and now all hours of the night they come down my street. I’m actually moving because of it,” said Brandi Richardson who lives on Pritchard Ave.

Selkirk Ave. is closed between Salter St. and McGregor St. and drivers are getting around the section on nearby residential streets, like Pritchard.

“I have a little one year old, I used to just walk down the sidewalk with her and now I have to have a little leash for her because there are so many cars,” said Richardson.

Residents in St. James have similar concerns, where two road closures in the area are causing traffic headaches.

“It’s been pretty crazy, a lot of buses passing by it’s pretty loud all the time, like through the night even it gets pretty loud,” said Elias Tekle, who lives on School Rd.

“When I back out, they’ll come right by you. They don’t care, 95 per cent of the people going down the street don’t belong in the area,” said Gary Miller, who lives on Valley View Dr.

The city monitors traffic patterns for all projects that require long term road closures.

If they receive complaints about a specific situation, they do targeted data collection to determine if corrective measures need to be taken, like adding a temporary stop sign or speed bumps.

In the St. James area, traffic volume and speed studies were both undertaken but the city determined that no extra measures were needed to control traffic.
