The Conference Board of Canada expects the rebuild in Fort McMurray will boost Alberta’s economy by about half a point.
Some Calgary contractors are hoping they can help out the northern city that was devastated by wildfire, and also help out their own financial situation.
Concrete worker Mike Kirby told Global News he is hoping to head north soon, since he has had very few contracts lately.

Kirby is one of many people who has listed himself on the Calgary-based website JobJar.
“It’s very important that we get the people back into their homes,” Kirby said.

JobJar has a category for Fort McMurray homeowners trying to find contractors with background checks or restoration companies looking for employees.
Before the fire there was not a lot of construction work in Fort McMurray. Housing starts had plummeted by 80 per cent.
Fort McMurray officials have stressed they will focus on hiring local companies to do restoration work whenever possible.
