New Brunswick legislature raises pride banner following Orlando shooting

The pride banner has been raised at the New Brunswick legislature in memory of people killed and wounded by a gunman at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

Deputy Premier Stephen Horsman says the banner was scheduled to be raised this coming Friday in recognition of national Pride Month, but it was decided to raise it now to express condolences to the people of the United States.

Attacker Omar Mateen killed 49 club patrons and wounded 53 others.

He says any time a particular group of people is picked on, or sought out, is devastating.

Mateen was killed in a gun battle with police.

A candle light vigil is being held Monday night at 8 p.m. at the Riverfront Park in Moncton.
