Search underway for teen who disappeared while swimming in Winkler area

Underwater search and rescue teams are looking for a teen who disappeared while swimming with two friends near a diversion dam in the Winkler area.

RCMP said they were called to the dam 9:30 p.m. Wednesday after a 17-year-old boy out swimming with two friends could not be found.

The dam is on Road 17 West, about five kilometers east of Winkler in the RM of Rhineland.

The boy was not found despite an extensive search by both Winkler and Morden Fire Departments, and Wednesday night.

Both the underwater recovery team and search and rescue teams with the RCMP are continuing search efforts Thursday.

RCMP said water in the area where the boys were swimming was fast flowing due to heavy rains. In a news release RCMP are “reminding everyone to never underestimate the power of current.”
