Rehtaeh Parsons Society hosts semicolon tattoo fundrasier

An awareness campaign ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day kicked off Friday afternoon in Bedford, N.S.

The second annual Semicolon Tattoo Fundrasier was held at Six Points Tattoo Parlour. The semicolon has become a symbol of hope and love for those who are struggling with depression, suicidal thoughts and self-injury.

The event was hosted by the Rehtaeh Parsons Society as a way to raise funds to help their organization help others.

Parsons died following a suicide attempt in 2013 after repeatedly being harassed both online and at her high school.

“I do this event and other events obviously to honour my daughter and what she went through and also to help other people so they don’t go through the pain and the suffering that we have went through,” said Leah Parsons, Rehtaeh’s mother.

As part of the event, Leah Parsons created take care of me kits to hand out. The packages contain a number of small items meant to remind people how to take care of themselves and that they’re worthy.

The semicolon tattoo event continues Saturday — which is World Suicide Prevention Day — from noon until 7 p.m.
