HALIFAX – Nova Scotia’s labour minister says she is considering a union request for a mediator as a December strike deadline looms in the contract dispute with public school teachers.
But Kelly Regan says she has to have some indication from both sides that there is the prospect of some sort of resolution including a possible contract settlement in the dispute.

She says the appointment of a mediator would not prevent the teachers from taking job action by their Dec. 3 deadline, although both sides could agree that none would occur while mediation is underway.
There was no word on when Regan would make her decision.

The latest twist in the dispute comes after both sides couldn’t agree on terms to seek conciliation earlier this week.

In the legislature today Premier Stephen McNeil continued his attack for a second day on the teacher’s salary and benefits package, a marked change from his more conciliatory tone earlier in the dispute.
