Jon Stewart slams ‘hypocrisy’ of labelling all Donald Trump voters racist

Former Daily Show host Jon Stewart chided liberals for branding all Donald Trump voters racist, in an interview with Charlie Rose on “CBS This Morning” on Thursday.

Stewart, who was promoting his new book An Oral History, was asked about his thoughts on the U.S. presidential election.

“I thought Donald Trump disqualified himself at numerous points,” Stewart said. “But there is now this idea that anyone who voted for him is — has to be defined by the worst of his rhetoric.

“Like, there are guys in my neighbourhood that I love, that I respect, that I think have incredible qualities who are not afraid of Mexicans, and not afraid of Muslims, and not afraid of blacks. They’re afraid of their insurance premiums.”

“In the liberal community, you hate this idea of creating people as a monolith. Don’t look at Muslims as a monolith. They are the individuals and it would be ignorance. But everybody who voted for Trump is a monolith, is a racist. That hypocrisy is also real in our country.”

Stewart denied that American voters’ decision to hand Trump the presidency signaled a fundamental shift in the country’s identity.

“The same country with all its grace and flaws, and volatility, and insecurity, and strength, and resilience exists today as existed two weeks ago,” Stewart said. “The same country that elected Donald Trump elected Barack Obama.”

The 53-year-old also labelled Trump a “repudiation of Republicans,” and said he was surprised that the President-elect wasn’t questioned more about how exactly he planned to achieve the aims of his campaign slogan, “Make America great again.”

Stewart also criticized establishment Republicans like House speaker Paul Ryan for the hypocrisy of preventing the smooth running of government and then setting up to “come to Jesus now about the power of government.”
