An 87-year-old woman has died of her injuries in hospital after she was struck by a SUV in west-end Toronto Tuesday morning.
Toronto police said the incident happened around 8 a.m. near the intersection of Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue West.
Authorities said the woman was attempting to cross a traffic island in the middle of the roadway when she was hit.
“We had an individual who was at the centre island waiting area and had stepped off eastbound towards the east side of Bathurst Street and was struck by a northbound vehicle which was in the left lane,” Const. Clint Stibbe said.

The woman was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead.
There’s no word yet on the cause of the fatal collision or if the driver of the vehicle will face any charges.

“In this particular case we are looking at the design of the area, if something needs to change to make it safer for residents in the area,” Stibbe said.
A witness told Global News the area is frequented by people living at two seniors buildings nearby.
Police said this is the 42nd pedestrian fatality on Toronto streets this year.
