Elizabeth Wettlaufer, charged in deaths of 8 seniors, appears in court

A court appearance is scheduled next month for the former nurse facing over a dozen criminal charges, including eight counts of first-degree murder.

Elizabeth Wettlaufer, 49, made a brief court appearance in Woodstock, Ont., on Friday and was remanded into custody until April 7.

A judicial pretrial was slated to begin Friday, and will be completed during her next court appearance.

Usually held in the judge’s chambers, a judicial pretrial involves the defense lawyer, the Crown attorney and the police officer in charge of the case.

It’s a chance for the defence lawyer to discuss and negotiate the case with the Crown attorney while receiving input from a judge.

A trial date is set if one or more judicial pretrials fail to see the two sides resolve the charges against the accused.

Wettlaufer’s defense lawyer indicated during Friday’s appearance that he’s expecting to receive further disclosure on March 30.

Last October, Wettlaufer was charged in connection to the deaths of residents at long-term care homes in London and Woodstock.

Police have accused Wettlaufer of using drugs to kill the seniors while she worked at the facilities between 2007 and 2014.

In January, police laid six additional charges against the former nurse: four counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault involving more long-term-care residents in Woodstock, Paris, and a private home in Oxford County.
