Gallery: Pope Benedict XVI makes final public address

About 100-thousand people packed Vatican City’s St. Peter’s Square Wednesday morning to witness history in the making. Pope Benedict XVI was given a thundering applause after using his final general audience to recall moments of “joy and light” during his papacy, but also times of great difficulty. In his last address to the world’s 1.2-billion Catholics, he thanked his cardinals, colleagues and ordinary faithful for respecting his decision this month to become the first pope in 600 years to resign.
