High River resident arrested for allegedly wielding knife in front of police

Edmonton – Police say a man has been arrested after he brandished a knife in front of RCMP officers at a checkpoint in High River.

The 24-year-old demanded to be allowed to return to his home, according to the RCMP.

Police claim the man was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

The High River resident has been charged with Possession of a Weapon for a Purpose Dangerous to the Public Peace.

No one was hurt during the incident which happened late Sunday afternoon.

There is a mandatory evacuation order in place in High River because of flooding. It has displaced 13,000 residents in the community.

The RCMP has setup checkpoints to control who comes in and out of the town.

High River declared a state of emergency Thursday morning.
